What is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy?
Francine Shapiro created EMDR in the late 1980s for individuals who experienced a traumatic event and have PTSD related symptoms. This therapy was designed to resolve traumatic memories in the brain that have to be unprocessed. EMDR involves reconditioning the fight, flight, and freeze responses in the brain while managing the psychological aspects of the event. This therapy has helped millions of people and is an effective and efficient evidence-based treatment.
How EMDR Works:
Many Individuals start the therapy and begin by identifying an event and associating any negative beliefs surrounding the event or memory. Once the event and beliefs are accessed, the therapist will then proceed with the rapid eye movement process. During this process, the therapist will prompt a new and positive belief that can help change the perception of the event and bring new insight for the individual.
EMDR therapy sessions will help refigure the neurological areas of the brain and change the negative cognitions associated with the event. It will alter the way individuals view their memories while applying new coping mechanisms from their experience.
Who can Benefit?
EMDR has been used by many famous cultural influencers such as Prince Harry and Sandra Bullock. For example, Prince Harry experienced childhood trauma and Sandra Bullock witnessed an at-home break-in. Both used this therapy to help cope and heal from their experiences and continue to have an impact on our society today.
