What is Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

TF-CBT is a short-term therapy treatment that creates long-term effects. This therapy has over 25 years of successful evidence-based treatment and continues to cultivate the therapeutic industry today. TF-CBT helps children from the ages of 3-21 years old who deal with a wide range of traumas including sexual abuse, physical abuse, domestic violence, etc., and exhibit symptoms such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, cognitive and behavioral challenges, and many more.

TF-CBT also helps parents and/or caregivers understand different types of trauma/behaviors and how to deal with stress while building a trusting relationship with their child. This therapy has helped many families strengthen their support systems and continues to change lives every day.

    What to Expect?

   Step 1: Assessment

  • Therapy sessions will begin with you, the parent/caregiver, and your child.
  • Your therapist will assess and identify the specific trauma(s)/behaviors that will be focused on in sessions and explain the course of treatment and how it will specifically benefit you and your child.
  • Step 2: Training and Skill Development
    • You and your child will gain an understanding of what trauma is and its consequences.
    • You will gain an understanding of what techniques will work with your child to help cope with their trauma/behavior. (ie. emotional regulation, relaxation, mindfulness, cognitive coping).
    • You will gain an understanding of what techniques will work for you, the parent or caregiver, to help manage your child’s behavior.
    • You will learn how to apply skills learned to help your child cope with trauma/behaviors successfully.
  • Step 3: More Specific Trauma Work
    • You will have an opportunity to process your child’s trauma with your therapist.
  • Step 4: Additional Skills Training as Needed
    • You and your child will have the opportunity to gain additional skills such as safety skills and/or more specific work on overcoming fear that stems from the trauma (ie. refusing to go to school).

Ultimately, TF-CBT has been researched extensively and more than any other child-based trauma therapy and has 20+ successful evidence-based case studies.         The licensed therapists who specialize in TF-CBT treatment desire to walk alongside you and your child to make a difference and reduce trauma-related                      symptoms so your child can live out a successful life.
